Lesotho Grant Description
Lesotho has the world’s third highest HIV prevalence rate in the world at 23%, with an estimated 270,000 adults and 18.000 children under the age of 15 living with HIV/AIDS. Deaths from AIDS related illness, estimated at 560 per week, have left in their wake 97,000 orphans. In Lesotho there are currently 18,000 people on antiretroviral treatment; up to 57,000 HIV positive people currently still need access to this treatment.
Lesotho’s Results: (RED) money that flows to Lesotho will support programs which have already:
- reached more than 21,400 women attending antenatal clinics with information on prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV
- provided 14 Health Service Areas with prevention of mother to child transmission programs
- trained more than 400 health professionals on prevention of mother to child transmission
- provided more than 6,000 HIV positive pregnant women treatment to help reduce the risk of mother to child transmission
- reached more than 48,400 pregnant women with HIV counseling and testing
- provided more than 92,700 people living with HIV/AIDS with access to community home-based care and support
- trained more than 800 health care providers on diagnosing and management of HIV and AIDS
- reached more than 22,800 people with antiretroviral treatment
- reached more than 262,000 people with HIV counseling and testing
- provided more than 67,000 orphans and vulnerable children with a basic package of care and support
- provided more than 1,400 orphans with educational support
